Digital SAT Strategy: How to Score High in 2026
The short answer
The Digital SAT is adaptive: each section has two modules, and how you do on the first decides whether the second is harder (a higher ceiling) or easier (a capped one). That makes Module 1 accuracy the single biggest lever on your score. Learn the format cold, protect Module 1 with careful work, master the built-in Desmos calculator, manage time per module, and prep with the official Bluebook tests and an error log — specifics beat hours of random drilling.
The Digital SAT isn't the paper test on a screen. It's shorter, fully adaptive, and built around tools that reward a different kind of preparation. Altogether that's 98 questions in about 2 hours 14 minutes, taken on the Bluebook app, scored 400–1600, with a 10-minute break between the two sections and no penalty for wrong answers. Passages are short — one question each — and a graphing calculator is built in for all math.
The adaptive engine — why Module 1 is everything
Each section's first module is a mixed-difficulty "base." How you perform on it determines your second module: do well, and Module 2 gets harder — but unlocks higher-weight questions and a higher possible score; struggle, and Module 2 gets easier, but your top score is capped. Because harder questions carry more weight, the most valuable points on the whole test are the ones that secure a strong Module 1. Accuracy from the very first question matters more than it ever did on the old linear SAT.
Two expensive habits to kill in Module 1: rushing the easy questions (careless errors are costly) and over-investing in one hard question while leaving several gettable ones behind. Steady, clean work early protects your ceiling.
Time is managed per module, not per question
You can't carry minutes from Module 1 into Module 2, or from Reading & Writing into Math — when a module's clock ends, it locks. Within a module, though, you can spend longer on a tough question if you bank time elsewhere. Rough pacing: about 1.2 minutes per Reading & Writing question and 1.6 per Math question. Answer the quick ones first, use the mark-for-review flag, and circle back.
Master the built-in tools
The biggest one is the Desmos graphing calculator, available for all math (in 2026 you can switch between scientific and graphing modes anytime). Learn to solve equations, find intercepts, and graph functions quickly — it can turn a hard algebra problem into a few clicks. Practice with it long before test day. Reading & Writing tactics
Short passages, one question each, across four domains: Craft & Structure (including words in context), Information & Ideas, Standard English Conventions (grammar), and Expression of Ideas (transitions) — roughly in that order within a module.
- Predict your own answer before reading the choices — especially on words-in-context and transition questions.
- For grammar, know the core rules cold: commas, subject–verb agreement, pronouns, and modifiers.
- For evidence and inference, the answer lives in the passage — not in your outside knowledge.
- Read the question before the passage so you know what you're hunting for.
Math tactics
Four domains: Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving & Data Analysis, and Geometry & Trigonometry, with a mix of multiple-choice and student-produced (grid-in) answers and a calculator throughout.
- Lean on Desmos to graph and solve — it's faster and more accurate than hand algebra under pressure.
- When stuck, plug in numbers or work backward from the answer choices.
- Write out your setup to avoid careless slips, and check what the question actually asks (and the units).
- There's no penalty, so never leave a blank — guess if you must.
Prep that actually raises scores
- Take a full-length Bluebook practice test early for a baseline and to learn the digital tools — nothing else replicates the real adaptive feel.
- Use the official free prep (Khan Academy / College Board), which personalizes by skill.
- Keep an error log. Track the question types you miss most and drill those — not just your total score.
- Practice timed modules, not untimed sets. The locked clock is the real challenge.
- Start two to six months out and space your practice over weeks — spacing beats cramming.
Test-day execution
- Answer every question — there's no guessing penalty, so never leave one blank.
- Don't panic if the test "changes personality" after Module 1: a harder Module 2 is good news — it means you did well.
- Flag and move on; never let one question eat the module.
- Sleep, eat, and arrive early. You may bring an approved backup calculator, but the built-in one is enough.
The bottom line
The Digital SAT rewards consistency and tool fluency more than raw speed. Protect Module 1, master Desmos, manage time per module, and prepare with the official adaptive tests and an error log. Then walk in knowing that a harder Module 2 is a sign you're winning.
